ICCF Ratings
Remarks from the Ratings Commissioner
Papenin and the New Rules
Without having finished a game in the recent period Joop van Oosterom is back on the top. Papenin lost eight points though he did not loose any game but two wins and six draws against lower rated players was not enough to hold his high rating. On the other side he could no longer benefit from low startratings due to the new formula which uses the last published rating as base value for a player instead of the startrating.
This may be unpleasent for him, nevertheless I am still convinced that this way of calculation is better and surely leads in general to a quicker approximation to the players’ real strength. Also to use the higher value of startrating and last published rating for the opponent seems to prove itself – no longer complaints about a too low startrating if an opponent goes up during the game!
The ratings before you are based on the results from 01/06/2012 to 31/08/2012 and valid from 01/10/2012 till 31/12/2012. The next list will be published at 15/12/2012 and will be valid for the 1st quarter of 2013.
