FIDE IM Twan Burg has kindly provided us with a short biography:

I am 23 years old and live in Schijndel (NED). My hobbies are soccer, gym, and intellectual games.

I learned chess on age 6 and have been very active since then. In won several youth championships, including Dutch U10 and U16. In 2004 I managed to become 3rd in the European Union U14. I scored 5/9 at the European Youth Championships U18 in 2008.

In 2009 I became IM after winning the IM Tournament Cultural Village Wijk Aan Zee(NED). My other norms I scored in Deizisau(Germany), Enschede(NED) and Ohrid (ECC, Macedonia, 7 rounds).

I play for clubs in different countries: Amay (Belgium), SK Turm Emsdetten (Germany), HMC Den Bosch (NED) and Sant Josep de Badalona (CAT).

In 2012 I scored my first GM norm in the GM tournament BDO Haarlem (NED). I am still trying to obtain my other norms. The 2500-mark I have passed already.

I am proud of the strong opponents I have beaten in my chess career: Bacrot, Ni Hua, Romanov and Giri (2x) are among my victims. The games are in Mega2013.

From 2007-2012 I studied Econometrics and Operational Research in Tilburg University. The Master was called Mathematical Economics.

Last year I have been focussing on chess only. In the beginning of 2014 I hope to start a job.

In the recent years I have become increasingly active as a chess author/journalist. I publish on the website of my Dutch club and I write articles on chess news websites schaaksite.nl and newsaboutchess.com.

Since December 2012 I have been playing correspondence chess. I got contacted by Jos van Doorn to play in the Olympiad. The reason was that I have been playing on website jijbent.nl for many years. This is a website where you can play a lot of different games with a thinking time of at least one day per move.
My experiences with CC have been quite good so far. As a beginning OTB player (yes, I am familiar with the terms already) I had some fear for the opponents' engines. Later I discovered that all I had to do was just making good moves and that guys with ICCF 2500 are beatable. Also I like to do research in the openings. Analyzing opening variations has been a hobby for me for many many years.

For my CC future I would like to settle a decent rating and to play important games for the national team. Also in the future it would be nice to enroll in some WC-Cycle. However I try to limit my games, because my main focus will be on my job and OTB chess. So let's see what the future will bring..
