How to Withdraw, Replace or Substitute Players

Principle

The system allows players to be replaced or defaulted during the creation and playing of server and non-server events.

Practice

  1. To withdraw a player, select Event List/Event/Control/Player/Withdraw.

Check the type of withdrawal using the radio buttons provided.

For an accepted withdrawal (default), you may select Cancel Remaining Games to complete the cross-table entry, or Replace Player (below) to begin the search of the player list for a substitute.

For an unaccepted withdrawal, you may select Email Player to allow the player to complete his/her games, or Default Player (refer How to Penalize or Default Players) to eliminate the player from the event and default his/her games.

For a silent withdrawal, you may select Default Player (as above) or select Cancel to quit.

  2. To substitute a player (for Team tournaments only), select Event List/Event/Control/Player/Withdraw.

Withdraw the player as accepted (as above). The system will tell you if you may substitute the player, or if replacement is the most viable option. Select Replace Player if suggested by the system and enter the new id or use Lookup to locate the replacement from the player list. The system will insist on a registered or new replacement player; select OK and Commit to confirm once this is checked (refer How to Create an Event for the substitutions rule). You may substitute a player if he has finished one game at least or if the average number of moves played is more than 10. If the withdrawing player does not fulfill these two conditions, you may replace the player instead (refer Tournament rule # 6 for a detailed explanation). The system may reject the procedure if the replacement player was not included in the rating list valid at the start of the tournament, if you encounter this problem please contact the Rating Commissioner (RC).

  3. To replace a player, select Event List/Event/Control/Player/Withdraw.

Withdraw the player as accepted (as above). The system will tell you if you may replace the player, or if substitution is the most viable option.
Select Replace Player if suggested by the system and enter the new id or use Lookup to locate the replacement from the player list.
The system will insist on a registered or new replacement player; select OK and Commit to confirm once this is checked (refer How to Create an Event for the substitutions rule). You may replace a player only if he has not finished any games and the average number of moves played is less than 10. If the withdrawing player does not fulfill these two conditions, and if it is a team event then please substitute the player instead (refer Tournament rule # 6 for a detailed explanation). The system may reject the procedure if the replacement player was not included in the rating list valid at the start of the tournament, if you encounter this problem please contact the Rating Commissioner (RC). The FIDE rating of the replacement player can be entered in the last step of the replacement wizard of a rated event. The start rating of the new player is calculated accordingly. The category of the event is recalculated accordingly, for International Title Tournaments and emailed to the Qualifications Commissioner (QC) as a proposal. If the newly calculated Tournament Category is zero, the email to the QC will list the reasons for this.

Webserver Actions

For accepted withdrawals, the player's games are cancelled in the event, or a replacement player is substituted in the event.

For unaccepted or withdrawals, the player either continues or is defaulted.  For silent withdrawals, the player is defaulted.

Norm categories are automatically recalculated where players are replaced in title events.
