ANNOUNCEMENT – Invitational Tournaments

Saturday, October 12, 2013: Dick van Geet Memorial

Dear Friends,

The Dutch correspondence chess association NBC has the pleasure to announce the invitational tournament “Dick van Geet Memorial. The tournament was approved by the ICCF WTD and the NBC cordially invites National Federations to submit players to participate.

Dick van Geet (1932-2012)

GM Dick van Geet was among the best Dutch Correspondence players as well as a strong over the board player. He was awarded the correspondence GM title in 1990. One of his best results was winning the 40 Jahre BDF tournament (1986-1992), ahead of English GM Simon Webb and Dutch GM and later World Champion Gert Jan Timmerman.

In over the board play, Van Geet became Dutch youth champion in 1952. One of his best achievements was winning the 1965 Master group of the Hoogovens tournament. This also earned him the IM title.

However, the name of Van Geet is probably best known for the opening 1.Nc3 that was named after him. Dick Van Geet was well know for his unconventional opening play. After defeating Bisguier over the board in 1961 with his trademark opening he said in a Dutch newspaper interview: “I employ guerilla tactics. I know little chess theory. If I want to be successful I have to systematically try to get my opponent out of his preparation. An unexpected and unusual move sometimes does magic.” Also in correspondence play Van
Geet successfully employed his opening. He defeated Danish GM Erik Bang in the HJ Mostert Memorial Team Match (2006-2009) playing 1.Nc3.

In commemoration of this strong and colorful Dutch grand master, the NBC has the honor of organizing the ‘Dick van Geet Memorial’.
